In Akita Prefecture, you can enjoy an abundance of nature and beautiful scenery such as the Shirakami Mountain Range (a World Heritage Site) as well as Japan’s deepest lake, Lake Tazawa.
Akita University is located in Akita City with a population of 320,000. As the capital city of Akita Prefecture, Akita City takes the central role in the regional politics and economy. Akita City also has convenient transportation systems as well as relatively little automobile traffic. Akita is one of the best destinations in Japan to study abroad!
Eligible Students: Second-semester Sophomore standing or greater with a GPA of 2.5; graduate students
Language of Instruction: English, except for language courses
Duration of Program: Academic year, Fall or Spring semester
- Fall: Beginning of September through late December (with an optional extension through early March)
- Spring: Beginning of April through late July
- Summer - Mid June through Late July (Intensive Japanese Language Only)

Academic Credit: Transfer Credit
Grades: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Courses taken at the host institution will be counted as credit hours and apply to the student's degree and graduation; however, the courses will not affect the student's GPA.
Tuition: Students pay their regular MSU Tuition
Program Fees/Student Activity Fees: Students will be subject to the payment of course fees or student activity fees levied by the host university.

Akita International University is a liberal arts college with four programs in addition to a core curriculum:
- Japanese Language Program
- Japan Studies Program
- Global Business Program
- Global Studies Program
We actively promote international exchange and nearly 20% of the student body is made of of international exchange students from our 182 exchange partners in 47 countries.
