Bioarchaeology in Croatia I & II: Human Osteology and Excavation

Program Description:
The program begins with intensive osteology for a month in Zagreb in collaboration with the Institute for Anthropological Research. This gives us access to their skeletal collections spanning from the upper Paleolithic to modern human remains, guest lectures, visits to local museums and the Neanderthal site of Krapina, and exposure to modern techniques such as CT and MRI technology. After a month in Zagreb, we will transition to Koprivnica for a month of excavation in an early Medieval cemetery and church complex. Students will work with faculty and Croatian students in a supervised and quick-paced excavation of human remains. Weekend excursions will include visiting local collections and other excavations.
